We are using sets of books provided by Sheffield Libraries.  This is a free service but means that we have to read two books as only 10 copies of each book are provided.  The theory is that half the members read one book, and half read the other.  We will meet, split into our smaller groups and discuss the book just read.  At the next meeting the whole Group will discuss both books.  Every reader will be given a chance to speak but this is not compulsory.

We are not a playreading group, nor do we put on stage productions. We read a play for ourselves and then discuss it in the group under the enthusiastic and expert guidance of our tutor, Mike Gardner, who was once a lecturer in Drama. Mike takes us in a lively and informative way through aspects of a play such as plot, characters, historical background, and production. Where possible we tie in our study of a play with a visit to see it at the Crucible or the Lyceum on a group visit. Reading a play to oneself is an acquired skill: plays are not as user-friendly as novels or poems. It is, however, very rewarding once you have the knack.

We are interested in all forms of literature - drama, poetry, novels, biography etc - originally in English or in translation. A topic is chosen by the group; each member chooses a reading to take 10 -15 minutes. The piece is introduced and discussed. Occasionally a broader topic is chosen according to the expertise and interest of members.

We use sets of plays borrowed from Sheffield Library. Parts are assigned and we read through the play, changing characters after each scene. The aim is to enjoy reading the plays, rather than to study them. We read everything from Aristophanes up to modern authors like Ayckbourn.
