Report and Photos from the Leader

A total of ten people (nine from J Group plus one visitor from P) came on the "Challenge walk", the idea of which was to visit the north-western extremity of Sheffield District at Swains Head and then to follow the "frontier" over the moors and Outer Edge to Margery Hill. We started just after 10am from Kings Tree, at the northern end of the road alongside Derwent and Howden Reservoirs, and walked up the Derwent valley, crossing into Sheffield District at the bridge above Slippery Stones. The statutory 11am "coffee stop" was made opposite Lower Small Clough and Swains Head was reached at about 12.15. The warmth of the day was now beginning to be something of a problem and progress along "the top" was slower than expected though the moorland was drying out nicely and few problems were encountered until one member went knee-deep into a grough shortly before Margery Hill.

The surprise of the day came as we approached the summit of Margery Hill. The leader had had an inkling of what might happen when he was given strict instructions at the beginning not to alter the route or reverse its direction. The trig point looked an odd shape, which proved to be because champagne bottles and other goodies were standing on it ! Julian Oakley and his assistants from P Group had done us proud. Many thanks, and well done !

Leader Bill had optimistically intended an "interesting" return route to Kings Tree but decided the party (well, he) really were ready to return by the direct route. We therefore did and duly descended Cut Gate to cross the Derwent again at Slippery Stones, returning to Kings Tree about 4.45.
